RULES

RULES 5TH EDITION ETIQUETANEWS AWARDS 2022

Graphic design students from approved educational institutions, public and private, which the organization has invited, can submit entries for the EtiquetaNews Awards; as well as students from any other educational institution who want to do so independently. In addition to the prizes awarded by the organization, the winners will benefit from major exposure that will help them enhance their possibilities and visibility in the labor market.

The rules (briefing) of this edition are:

LABEL TYPE

The graphic project consists of designing a label or sleeve for a wine (red, white or rosé) made in any country in the world. All the parameters that we have defined below are free and open-ended, in order to discover the participants’ talent in this special edition of the 5th Anniversary of the EtiquetaNews Awards.

Illustrations or photos used must be original.

Labels or sleeves that do not comply with the briefing in its entirety will not be accepted.

ORIGINALITY OF LABELS AND NAMING

The design is absolutely unrestricted and the name of the wine (naming) has to be invented, taking into account that we would be talking about a winery that could be located in any country in the world. However, names of cities, people or brands, which are known, cannot be used.

WHAT IS THE WINERY THAT PRODUCES IT LIKE?

The winery that produces the wine may have a long tradition of making wines or it may be newly created. Each participant freely decides about it.

COMPOSITION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINE

There are no restrictions on the type of grape from which the product is made nor on the aging time of the wine. Therefore, it can be a young wine or one that has been kept for years in a barrel.

BRAND VALUES TO BE CONVEYED

The brand must convey clear values of the product so that its positioning is clear: craftsmanship, quality, modernity, etc. Those that each participant understands that best define the product.

WHAT DOES THE LABEL OR SLEEVE HAVE TO LOOK LIKE?

We are looking for a graphic design proposal that is based on a clear concept, that conveys a story. That is, we are not looking for a label or sleeve that simply presents a harmonic composition or is beautiful. We want a label or sleeve that has a soul and that seduces by its originality. One that transmits the values of the brand and that stands out clearly from the crowd. A label in which there is a connection between the naming and the general image of the product.

The entrant can use any existing graphic resource and any type of printing finish available to carry out the design.

In this regard, we suggest that you carefully read the following GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS TO PARTICIPATE.

LABEL/SLEEVE MEASUREMENTS

There is no restriction on the size of the label or sleeve, but it must be printable. Dies may be used to print the label. Participants can design in all the available space in the bottle of their choice. It can be printed in any of the existing printing systems: offset, flexo, digital, screen, letterpress and combined. The choice of the tonality of the bottle is also up to the preference of each participant.

The front and back label must include the details of the market in which it is going to be sold.

TARGET CUSTOMER AT WHOM THE WINE IS AIMED

The wine can be aimed at any age segment over 18 years of age.

WHERE WILL THE WINE BE SOLD?

The wine could be sold through any existing distribution channel: department stores, grocery stores, specialized outlets or the Internet.

SELF-ADHESIVE MATERIALS

Participants must develop the design of the labels taking into account what hypothetical type of self-adhesive material would be printed. This material must be specified at the time of registration. In the case of sleeves, this indication is not necessary.

We must stress the importance of choosing adhesive materials that enhance the design of the label and the product in general, as well as its state of its distribution and conservation before being served.

We provide some websites of the main manufacturers of self-adhesive materials on the market: Avery Dennison, Arconvert, UPM Raflatac...

TYPES OF BOTTLES TO USE

Any type of bottle available on the market can be used.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DESIGNING THE CAPSULE

Capsules are the seals on the top of wine bottles. It is a plug cover that has both an aesthetic and hygienic purpose. They can be made from tin, lead-tin alloy, aluminum and polyethylene, PVC and aluminum.

We propose that the participant include the capsule in their label design with whatever color he or she prefers, as it will enhance the general visual appeal of the project.

LOGOS TO APPLY

All those that are used in the sale and marketing of the wine in the market in which it is intended to be distributed.

HOW IS YOUR LABEL OR SLEEVE DESIGN PRESENTED?

The three images of the label or sleeve that have to be presented can be a mockup or they can be photographs of these after having been attached to a real bottle. We recommend that you choose the most elegant option. Below we explain the technical details of how each of them should be presented.

In image No.1, the participant can present the label applied to other products of the brand: (white wine, rosé, etc.) in the background in order to show its versatility in a hypothetical range. However, the judges will focus their assessment on the main label, which has to be displayed with total clarity.
